To Infinity or Meatloaf!

Lenore made the astute observation that Odie looks a lot like Buzz Lightyear. I think she may be on to something. Also, I have to say, I have NEVER seen Odie and Buzz together!! Coincidence???

Better Gnomes & Gardens

We scored BIG at this year's annual Hysterical Society garage sale! This was Lenore's view as we rode home with our cart full of useful crap. I got three (three!) slightly worn garden gnomes, a squirrel-proof (ha!) bird feeder (but only a buck!), an off-season Croc rack (for tidy winter Croc storage), and a handsome three-legged turtle for a quarter, to name just a few of the items procured, and all for a good cause.

Lenore also got herself a little gnome -- seen here with a nifty wheelbarrow. I won't even wax poetic on all the possible stories one could concoct from this photo, but I think whatever comes of the situation, it should involve the turtle getting a ride. I mean, really.

I was maybe a little too delighted with the gnome still life options. So sue me. I like the way the front guy is peeking out of the cart.

But I also like the way Lenore's gnome is looking up at the other guys.

Hoops wasn't sure what to make of the new family members at first, but eventually she decided they were not as tasty as they looked.

Lenore named her gnome Norman II (per her neighbor's granddaughter, who used to know a gnome named Norman). I kind of like it. Maybe I'll name mine all Norman too. Or just "The Normans." I've noticed more cardinals in the bird bath since The Normans moved in. Maybe it's their perky little red hats. Here's Norman II in his new home in Lenore's ivy.

The turtle's name is still being decided. Suggestions? Actually, I need two names, cuz the other turtle doesn't have a name either. Jeeze.

Here's everyone at home in their new garden. It makes me smile every time I look out the window.

Speaking of new things in the yard, I've been noticing some new growth as of late. Little clover-like sproutings that I thought were weeds. After plucking a few out, I realized these are not weeds, they are peanut plants! This means the squirrels who planted them are indeed retarded or exceedingly clever.

July nosegay documentation:

In other garden news, the cherry tomato plants are going crazy, and I finally got a few ripe grownup tomatoes. The rest are all very green. Not shown: impressive bell peppers that got eaten before they could be documented. Oops.

Last weekend, I also went on a very swift kayak ride with Roland and Amy. The river is very high and fast right now, so we made it from the Algonquin dam to Dundee (just before the footbridge) in just under an hour and a half. Normally, that takes a good three hours (because we tend to do more drifting than paddling). We went on an evening float for a change, so it was a little too dark for pictures, but I did get this one of an egret and a heron in one shot. (Remember, you can click on pictures to see them larger.)

August nosegay documentation (the black-eyed Susans are in full swing!):

Sundae Dinner

To some it's dessert, but to us it was a 50th anniversary dinner. Congrats to the parental units for making it this far and not killing each other along the way. I called to say happy anniversary, and dad's all, "Well, I have no idea where your mother is." That, I believe, is the secret to a long marriage. Also, he hosed the raccoon poop off the steps, "so your mother doesn't step in it." I suspect is wasn't so much chivalry as self-preservation, cuz he knew he'd get the blame if she did! It's important to establish roles within a relationship.

Pre indulgence...

And here are some uncooperative ice cream eaters, post-meal, all wound up on sugar and unable to pose properly for a photo.

Not that I wasn't a little drunk myself (did you see all the hot fudge on that thing?!). It's possible they were glad to see us go.

Ahoy

Lenore took some pictures from the footbridge during my last kayaking trip. I've probably posted enough photos of this stretch to last a lifetime, but I do like this angle -- she was looking down while I was looking up and passing under the footbridge. She's going to send it the the newspaper's weekly contest so they can ignore it and print something stupid like a dog eating ice cream.

Here's Roland, Amy an Sabine deboating on the other side.

The season's first corn wasn't so hot, but Hoops liked it.

Parrot green! And navy!

More fun to mix and match. I've still got a 20% off coupon...

Where The Wild & Slightly Retarded Things Are

I got a cute little cement rabbit to put on (in?) the birdbath, which resides in what I now call "the hosta garden," because it sounds classy.

Also, I got those somewhat attractive but useless things to hang on the fence. Again -- it's all about being classy, and it's hard to beat faux sculpture for that.

What's weird is, the other day I noticed there were like 5 or 6 ants running around and around on the bunny. But how the heck did they get there on that bunny island?! They were quite frantic; it was like a Lost episode for ants, only without the plane crash.

So I put a stick across the water, and I was amazed that they found this bridge within, literally, two seconds. Except for one. I think it was maybe retarded (but still better off than that dead one in the water). It was all, "WhatdoIdo?WhatdoIdo? Hey! Where'dEverybodyGo?!What'sThisStickDoingHere? WhatdoIdo?WhatdoIdo?"

Meanwhile, the other ants are all celebrating by running around and around the outside of the bird bath, probably mocking the special needs ant. Finally, Rain Man Ant made it across. But I still don't know how they got on the bunny in the first place.

The bunny was all, "Good Lord, I'm glad THAT'S over with!"

In other garden news, the tomatoes are compLETELY out of hand, and the Swiss chard is taking over. Here you can see I've tied the tomatoes up in a big tangled mess, but at least I can walk through them. The majority of my tomato plants turned out to be be bearing cherry tomatoes, which is an odd, though not entirely unwelcome surprise. Miss Labeled, party of one?

Random rock garden photo.

Here's Pooh guarding some of the chard.

Piglet's all, "It smells good here, but what's up with that crazy-ass fish?!"

I may have anthropomorphized enough now...but I can't be sure.

Lenore's co-worker, Virginia, gave us some beet seeds, so we're giving it a whirl. Here's some being borned!
